Expert tree pruning and crown reduction in Bolton
Good pruning keeps a tree healthy, safe and in proportion with your garden — without the ugly “topping” that leaves trees misshapen and sprouting weak regrowth. Our City & Guilds NPTC qualified tree surgeons prune to sound arboricultural principles, cutting back to healthy growth points so the tree recovers well.
Our pruning services
- Crown reduction — reducing the overall height and spread of a tree while keeping its natural shape.
- Crown thinning — removing selected inner branches to let more light through and reduce wind resistance.
- Crown lifting — removing lower branches to clear roads, paths, drives and lawns.
- Deadwooding — taking out dead or dying branches before they fall.
- Formative pruning — shaping young trees so they grow into strong, well-balanced specimens.
- Pollarding — regular cutting back of suitable species such as lime and willow.
- Conifer reduction — lowering conifers to a manageable height while keeping privacy.
When should trees be pruned?
Most broadleaved trees are best pruned when they’re dormant, from late autumn to late winter. Some species, such as cherry and other Prunus, are better pruned in summer to reduce the risk of disease, and birch, maple and walnut bleed sap if cut in early spring. We’ll advise on the right timing for your tree — and in the nesting season we always check for active birds’ nests first.
Protected trees
Pruning a tree with a TPO, or one in a conservation area, needs permission or notice to the council. We’ll check for you and can handle the paperwork — see our guide to TPOs in Bolton.
